RetroShare is a decentralized, private, and secure peer-to-peer communication toolkit implemented in C++ with a Qt-based desktop GUI. It provides messaging, chat lobbies, forums, channels, file sharing, photo sharing, microblogging (The Wire), VOIP, and RSS feed reading, all over a distributed network using PGP identities and GXS (General Exchange Service) for group data synchronization. The architecture is modular with a core library, a separate GUI application, a headless service, and a plugin system (FeedReader, VOIP). Extensive unit tests exist for serialization, GXS sync, and network simulation. The codebase is actively maintained but shows signs of organic growth, including dead code paths, vendored dependencies, and some deprecated Qt usage.
