Dire Wolf is a software-defined Terminal Node Controller (TNC) for AX.25 packet radio, primarily serving the APRS (Automatic Packet Reporting System) community. It replaces traditional hardware TNCs by performing all modem and protocol processing in software on a general-purpose computer. The application demodulates audio from a sound card (or SDR/file) using high-performance DSP algorithms for AFSK, PSK, and GMSK modulations, decodes AX.25 frames, and processes APRS data types including position, weather, telemetry, and messages. It functions as a digipeater, IGate (Internet Gateway), APRStt (DTMF) gateway, and KISS TNC, providing multiple interfaces (TCP, serial, pseudo-terminal) for client applications like Xastir and APRSIS32. The codebase is a well-structured monolithic C application with a modular internal architecture, featuring clean abstractions for audio I/O, DSP, protocol framing, and network services. It includes experimental forward error correction modes (FX.25, IL2P) and a comprehensive telemetry toolkit.
