This repository is an out-of-tree Linux kernel driver package for Realtek RTL8188CE and a broad family of related Wi-Fi chipsets (RTL8192CE/CU/SE/DE, RTL8188EE, RTL8723AE/BE, RTL8821AE, RTL8192EE). It implements a mac80211-based wireless driver supporting PCI and USB interfaces, with hardware initialization, firmware loading, TX/RX descriptor management, power saving (IPS/LPS), Bluetooth coexistence, and regulatory compliance. The architecture is monolithic with chip-specific subdirectories sharing common infrastructure modules (base, pci, usb, rc, efuse, cam, regd, debug). The codebase is heavily derived from Realtek's vendor driver and exhibits significant duplication across chip variants, with thousands of magic register values in table files. Despite this, it provides functional wireless connectivity for many Realtek chips on Linux and includes helpful installation scripts and DKMS support. The driver integrates deeply with kernel APIs and firmware blobs, making it brittle across kernel versions but actively maintained with branch strategies for different kernels.
