This repository is the JavaScript Debugger extension for Visual Studio Code (and Visual Studio), implementing a Debug Adapter Protocol (DAP) server that debugs Node.js, Chrome, Edge, WebView2, VS Code extensions, Blazor, and other JavaScript/TypeScript runtimes. It uses the Chrome Debug Protocol (CDP) to control debuggee processes, providing breakpoints, stepping, source map resolution, variable inspection, console evaluation, profiling, and network inspection. The extension is the default JavaScript debugger in VS Code and can also run as a standalone DAP server for integration with other editors. Architecturally, the codebase is organized into several layers: the DAP layer handles communication with the IDE; the CDP layer manages connections to debuggee processes; the adapter layer translates between DAP requests and CDP commands, managing breakpoints, threads, variables, and source maps; the targets layer handles launching and attaching to different runtime types (Node, browser, extension host); the UI layer provides VS Code-specific integration (configuration providers, session management, diagnostics); and the common layer provides reusable utilities (logging, cancellation, data structures, source map handling). Dependency injection via InversifyJS is used throughout to decouple components and enable testability. Key entry points include src/extension.ts for VS Code activation, src/debugServerMain.ts for the standalone DAP server, and src/dapDebugServer.ts for the DAP server bootstrap. The system relies on external dependencies such as Node.js runtime, Chrome/Edge browsers, and various npm packages for CDP communication, source map parsing, and AST manipulation. The codebase includes an extensive integration test suite with golden file assertions, covering breakpoints, stepping, source maps, console formatting, and WebAssembly debugging.
