pcb2gcode is a mature command-line tool that converts PCB design files (Gerber RS-274X and Excellon drill files) into G-code for CNC milling, drilling, and board cutting. It is written in C++ and uses Boost (geometry, graph, units), gerbv for Gerber parsing, and optionally GEOS for geometric operations. The tool supports multiple CNC controller backends (LinuxCNC, Mach3, Mach4), metric/imperial units, tiling for large boards, automatic surface leveling (autoleveller), and advanced toolpath optimizations including Voronoi-based isolation milling, Eulerian path minimization, A* path finding with obstacle avoidance, and TSP-based drill ordering. A recent addition is a native Model Context Protocol (MCP) server, enabling AI assistants to invoke pcb2gcode directly. The architecture is modular: Gerber files are imported into Boost Geometry polygons/paths, then processed through a pipeline of surface vectorial rendering, toolpath generation, and G-code export. The codebase includes a comprehensive test suite with unit tests and integration tests that compare generated G-code against expected outputs for dozens of real-world PCB designs. The project is actively maintained with CI via GitHub Actions, dependency management via Renovate, and support for Linux, Windows (MSYS2), and macOS.
