SOEM is a production-grade C library implementing an EtherCAT master (MainDevice) protocol stack — the de facto open-source EtherCAT master used across industrial motion control, robotics, and factory automation. From code evidence, it performs slave discovery and auto-configuration via SII/EEPROM, builds and cycles process-data frames (LRW/LRD/LWR) with segmented multi-frame recombination, and implements the full mailbox protocol family (CoE, FoE, SoE, EoE) plus distributed clock (DC) synchronization. The repository also ships eight sample CLIs (slaveinfo, eepromtool, firm_update, simple_ng, eni_test, etc.) which exercise every protocol path against physical hardware.
