This repository is the official Confluent Python client for Apache Kafka (confluent-kafka-python), a production-grade library that provides both synchronous and asynchronous APIs for producing and consuming messages, managing topics and clusters via an admin client, and integrating with the Confluent Schema Registry for Avro, JSON Schema, and Protobuf serialization with rule-based validation, transformation, and field-level encryption. The architecture is a Python package with a C extension (cimpl) binding to librdkafka for high-throughput I/O, wrapped by higher-level serializing/deserializing producers and consumers, async wrappers using ThreadPoolExecutor, and a comprehensive schema registry client with pluggable rule executors (CEL, JSONata, encryption) and KMS drivers (AWS, Azure, GCP, HashiCorp Vault, local). Data flows involve producing messages with optional serialization and rule execution, consuming messages with deserialization and validation, and managing schema registry interactions for subject name resolution and rule configuration. External dependencies include librdkafka (bundled via C extension), and optional packages for Avro (fastavro), Protobuf (protobuf), JSON (orjson), encryption (tink), CEL rules (celpy), and cloud KMS backends (boto3, azure-*, hvac). The codebase is heavily tested with unit, integration, concurrency, and performance tests, and includes tools for building wheels, generating sync code from async sources, and managing releases.
