This repository (akermu/emacs-libvterm) implements a full-featured terminal emulator inside GNU Emacs, powered by the libvterm C library via Emacs dynamic modules. The architecture consists of two tightly coupled layers: a C module (vterm-module.c) that wraps libvterm and handles keyboard input, scrollback buffering, screen damage callbacks, and text rendering with ANSI terminal attributes; and an Emacs Lisp package (vterm.el) that provides the major mode, keybindings, process management, copy mode, prompt/directory tracking, and message passing between the shell and Emacs. The system is designed for deep shell integration through escape sequence protocols (e.g., OSC 51 for directory and prompt tracking). External dependencies include libvterm (system or vendored), CMake, and libtool. The codebase is stable and widely used (1999 stars) but shows moderate technical drift: it targets Emacs 25–26 APIs, uses Travis CI, and lacks automated tests. Despite this, it remains functional and is actively maintained through issue triage and incremental improvements.
