xanderfrangos/twinkle-tray ★ 9250 345 APPLICATION

Twinkle Tray is a Windows-only Electron system-tray utility that manages external monitor brightness through DDC/CI, WMI, and display-driver fallbacks. In production it enumerates physical monitors, probes DDC/CI capability strings, exposes VCP feature codes, and shows a Windows 11-style brightness flyout with settings for hotkeys, time-of-day schedules, light sensors, calibration, HDR/SDR levels, and app-triggered profiles. The main process (src/electron.js) is the orchestrator; a forked worker (src/Monitors.js) aggregates monitor state from several native N-API addons and channels it to the UI via IPC and preload bridges. Architecturally the app is an Electron shell around a set of vendored native Node addons (node-ddcci, wmi-bridge, win32-displayconfig, tt-windows-utils, windows-hdr, windows-ambient-sensor, and others) compiled with node-gyp. It also has a CLI/pipe/UDP command surface, crash-safety sentinels for flaky DDC probing, brightness calibration curves, and localization in 20+ languages. The strongest engineering is in the native addon layer and worker orchestration: handle lifecycle discipline, transient-error retry logic, per-monitor crash recovery, and typed monitor-state aggregation are thoughtfully implemented. However, the overall codebase carries significant debt. electron.js is monolithic, SettingsWindow.jsx is explicitly described by its own authors as spaghetti, the repository contains duplicated VCP tables and monitor-name helpers, dead/stubbed code exists beside live paths, and the build uses the legacy parcel-bundler v1. Localization keys have drifted substantially across languages, and some translations are incomplete or broken. The app works and is actively maintained, but reuse should target the standalone native modules and logging utility rather than the main process or settings UI.
