Paperless-ngx is a production-grade, self-hosted document management system. It ingests physical and digital documents through a consume folder, REST API uploads, and IMAP email fetching, then runs OCR via Tesseract/ocrmypdf, extracts text through a pluggable parser registry, generates archive PDFs and thumbnails, and stores structured metadata (tags, correspondents, document types, custom fields). Documents are indexed in Tantivy and exposed through a Django REST API consumed by an Angular SPA that provides search, editing, bulk operations, permissions, workflows, sharing, and an admin interface. Background processing is handled by Celery/Redis with real-time status pushed over WebSockets. The system also includes optional AI/LLM classification, RAG chat over the document index, and a workflow engine that reacts to consumption and document lifecycle events with actions like assignment, emailing, webhooks, and trash moves. Though primarily an application, it contains a substantial search-engine subsystem and an optional LLM/embedding pipeline, giving it a mild hybrid character.
nb is a command-line note-taking, bookmarking, and archiving tool with Git-backed versioning, encryption, full-text search, tagging, pinning, and a built-in web server for browsing. It is implemented primarily as a single portable Bash script, with optional Go, Ksh, and Zsh wrappers. The architecture is a monolith CLI with a plugin system for extending subcommands and themes. Key entry points are the `nb` script and its aliases `bin/notes` and `bin/bookmark`. Data flows involve creating/editing notes in `NB_DIR`, where each notebook is a Git repository; operations create automatic commits, and an `.index` file per folder maintains ordering. The tool supports multiple notebooks, nested folders, encryption (OpenSSL/GPG), bookmark import from browsers, and remote sync via Git. The extensive test suite (2200+ BATS tests) covers all major features and edge cases.
Sleek is a cross-platform desktop application (Electron + React + TypeScript) that serves as a feature-rich todo.txt manager. It reads and writes todo.txt files, providing advanced filtering, sorting, grouping, and archiving capabilities. The application features a custom filter grammar (PEG.js) for complex queries, file watching for real-time updates, due-date notifications with badge support, and a Pomodoro timer integration. The user interface is built with Material-UI components, offering a clean, customizable experience with dark/light themes and color customization. Sleek supports 16+ languages and includes optional Matomo analytics, respecting user privacy by never collecting todo content.
Vrecord is a bash-based CLI and GUI application for capturing analog and digital video signals to digital files, designed primarily for audiovisual archivists. It wraps ffmpeg-ma (a MediaArea fork of FFmpeg with Blackmagic DeckLink support) to capture from DeckLink devices, DV via FireWire, or audio-only inputs, and provides real-time monitoring through ffplay or mpv with configurable scopes (waveform, vectorscope, histograms, bit planes, etc.). The application generates preservation-oriented sidecar files including frame-level MD5 checksums, SCC closed caption files, QCTools XML reports, timecode logs, and optional access MP4 copies. Post-capture, it runs MediaConch policy checks, generates benchmark graphs with gnuplot, and can embed logs into Matroska containers. The codebase is monolithic, consisting of a single ~5000-line bash script (vrecord) that handles configuration (via gtkdialog), capture pipeline construction, and post-processing. Companion scripts include vtest for test signal output, vplay for playback with QC overlays, and cchex_to_display for real-time closed caption display. Dependencies are managed via Homebrew on macOS and Linux (including the AMIA Open Source tap). The project has been maintained for nearly a decade and is actively developed by a community of archivists and developers.
