Resque is a Redis-backed library for creating background jobs, placing those jobs on multiple queues, and processing them later. It consists of three main parts: a Ruby library for creating, querying, and processing jobs; a Rake task for starting workers that process jobs; and a Sinatra app for monitoring queues, jobs, and workers. Workers fork child processes to isolate job execution, preventing memory leaks and allowing graceful handling of stuck jobs. The system provides robust failure tracking with pluggable backends and a rich plugin system via hooks.
